23 Things Assignment #8

Unfortunately, my links to the YouTube videos did not seems to work. Nonetheless, I still have comments about it. YouTube is a really cool tool. But, again, it just seems like another time-waster - and I can speak from personal experience. I constantly have to drag my boyfriend away from YouTube in order to go to the gym or even go for a walk. I'm sure it can be used to produce something worthwhile, like advocacy or instructional videos for TPL. Ideally speaking, it should be used for creating something that will contribute to social development, but in reality it is and will, more often than not, be used for useless and tedious things. It seems to cut people off from each other and prevent others from interacting and socializing directly with one another more than it does to forge and strengthen social relations.

23 Things Assignment #7

Interesting and innovative, but just another time consuming activity. I have a feeling it may be a while before podcasts start significantly replacing radio AM and FM stations. While the advantage to podcasts is the ability to pick and choose precisely what the individual wants to hear, it doesn't really seem to allow for browsing, which, like channel surfing, is half the fun of listening to the radio. Again, innovative and creative, but more another activity for times of boredom.

23 Things Assignment #6

I really see a lot of potential for this Web 2.0 tool. Several weeks ago I was working on a Powerpoint group presentation for one of my classes and so many versions of the PP were sent that I lost track of which was the most recent. Had I been aware of Google Docs, I probably would have suggested to my group that it be used. But you live and you learn. Perhaps on my next group assignment I will suggest it to my classmates. So far, Google Docs and del.icio.us have been the most useful tools for my work.

23 Things Assignment #5

I found this tool really helpful, especially since a lot of my school assignments require a lot of internet resources. For me, this means that I can access resources for school assignments from anywhere, which in the end translates into me being able to put more time into my research work. Of all the 23 things we've explored so far, I find this one to be the most useful.

23 Things Assignment #4

I actually had a lot of fun with this one! It will definitely add an interesting element to any school presentations or assignments.

23 Things Assignment #3

For my feeds list I've chosen:
-BBC News World Edition
-Librarian's Internet Index
-The Shifted Librarian

Everything seemed pretty straightforward. The only thing that concerns me, however, is information overload. It seems that I already get useless emails. RSS seems to be just another way of inundating oneself with tedious information. Instead of fast food, it's fast information. That it is so easy to receive information makes it difficult for an individual to evaluate what is really worth knowing, much in the way that fast food does not allow us to really appreciate the necessity for nourishment. Nonetheless, I must admit that feeds like Library Journal, and Librarian's Internet Index are useful in one's professional development. I won't dismiss RSS feeds altogether, but I will have to practice caution in my selection of them.
